SYNOPSIS

Jamie Lloyd’s stripped-back, 1990s nightclub-inspired Much Ado About Nothing centres around the enemies-to-lovers pair Benedick and Beatrice, with the focus on the love triangles and high-octane pop interludes. 

Benedick and Beatrice, both single, are constantly at each other’s throats with rapid-fire linguistic sparring, sharp tongues, and battles of wit. Being tricked by their friends to believe the one is secretly in love with the other, the story takes a turn towards a hilarious, yet moving outcome as the pair realizes that it is not just trickery, but true – from both sides. 

On the other end, Hero and Claudio’s romance is spiraling out of control when Hero is framed as being unfaithful.

Much Ado About Nothing is a romantic comedy from the pen of the world’s most popular and adored playwright William Shakespeare, and is believed to have been written 1598 and 1599. To date, it is one of the legendary playwright’s most performed plays. 

It takes an exceptional amount of skill, theatrical mastery, and an extraordinary artistic vision to breathe life into a play that the whole world has seen, or at the very least, knows of. Director Jamie Lloyd (Sunset Boulevard, A Doll’s House, Romeo & Juliet, Evita, The Tempest, The Seagull, Waiting For Godot) has succeeded in bringing the classic into the here and now with mammoth accomplishment, two-stepping around the problematic elements of Shakespeare’s works and keeping it relevant. 

The award-winning creative team also includes the talents of set and costume designer Soutra Gilmour, lighting designer John Clark, sound designers and composers Ben and Max Ringham, movement director Fabian Aloise, associate director and text editor Jon Glew, wigs, hair and makeup designer Carole Hancock, fight director Kate Waters, intimacy coordinator Ingrid Mackinnon, and music supervisor Adam Rothenberg.

HISTORY & LEGACY

Much Ado About Nothing was first released in First Folio – a collection of William Shakespeare’s comedies, histories and tragedies, published in 1623. It is believed that the play was written in 1598 and 1599, and is one of the most-performed Shakespeare works today. Through the years, Much Ado About Nothing has seen many revivals – some precise carbon-copies of the original, and some revamped, reimagined and unique – but it remains a theatrical classic with countless awards under the belt.  

Director Jamie Lloyd’s Much Ado About Nothing premiered in February 2025 at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane in London’s West End to massive critical acclaim, and is scheduled to make its Broadway debut in fall 2026. To date, this revival has received four London Standard Theatre Award nominations, and four Critics’ Circle Theatre Award nominations.

THE WINTER GARDEN THEATRE

The iconic Winter Garden Theatre, situated on 1634 Broadway in Midtown Manhattan, New York, is one of the nation’s favorite Broadway go-to’s for the best of the best theatrical experiences. 

Opening in 1911, with its original design by architect William Albert Swasey and complete remodelling in 1922 by Herbert Krapp, the Winter Garden Theatre boasts stunning architecture in the Adam style with Edwardian Baroque detailing, and an exceptionally wide proscenium arch opening into a fan-shaped, 1,526-seat wide auditorium designed to evoke the feeling of an outdoor English garden.
